Should you slow down when your car is overheating? No you should not! What cools your engine is the combination of air flow and coolant flow across the radiator. Sometimes it is wise to increase your car speed to cool a overheating engine. Another way you can cool your vehicle is to turn on your heaters. Essentially heater is a cooling coil that dumps heat from the car's engine to the cabin of the car. On a sunny day you might be very uncomfortable, but your engine will be saved.

Can insects break your radiator? Not very likely at all. When you drive in an area where there are many insects your vehicle radiator will collect many of the remains. Don't worry because the hot radiator will quickly burn the bugs and it will leave only little pieces. You can easily wash that off with a water pressure gun. You don't have to worry about the bugs if you keep your car clean.

Does it matter what anti-freeze products I use? It absolutely does matter what products you put into your car. Some car manufacturers even void the vehicle warranty if you don't use the specified fluid that they recommend. Porsche is one of them. Always be sure and check your cars owners manual before you use any products in your radiator. You don't use any oil for your car and you shouldn't use any cooling liquid.

Should I perform a radiator flush? A radiator flush should be performed each year to make sure your radiator is working correctly and this helps the coolant to circulate properly through the engine cooling system. Solid deposits may form in the car's radiator over a period of time. Those deposits could block the coolant from circulating properly. Because of that the car may not cool itself as much as it should. A hot engine can damage many of its parts. Also if coolant isn't changed from time to time it becomes acidic and this causes its ability to cool the engine.

Is an aluminium radiator the best radiator? Aluminium radiators are used when building race cars or high performance vehicles. This is because aluminium is very light and if you can reduce weight then it would be great for increasing speed. The lighter the car the faster it can go. Besides that aluminium isn't the greatest heat conductor. A much better head conductor would be copper.

Common Mistakes That Can Ruin A Car Engine

Car engines are fairly complex machines that require many different parts to work in tandem in order to keep a vehicle moving. There are many minor things that can cause the motor to stutter or not start. There are certain problems, however, that can actually cause the motor to stop functioning and to potentially break permanently. No Motor Oil

Cars that have been sitting in storage or that have not been used in a long time can sometimes lose fluids due to a number of reasons. There are also situations where the fluids have been drained from a car and are then not replaced before attempting to start the engine. Just a few seconds of running an engine without the proper amount of fresh motor oil can cause the pistons to start grinding away the inside of the motor. The radiator on a car can sometimes sustain physical damage from debris on the road. It can also run low on water or antifreeze. Driving Through Water

Small amounts of water that can appear inside of an engine or gas tank because of condensation do not usually cause any serious problems. One exception to this rule is when a large amount of water is allowed to enter into the engine. This volume of liquid can flow in through the intakes if a car is driven through a sufficiently high level of water. It can also occur if water is somehow directly placed into the gas tank. The influx of water can prevent the pistons from moving properly and can result in a condition known as hydrolocking. This can cause serious damage to an engine and can require extensive repairs. Replacing hydrolocked motors with rebuilt engines is one of the only ways to restore flooded vehicles to an operational state.

As the economy recovers and people put together budgets, knowing how much money to allot for fuel can be difficult to estimate as gasoline prices continue to fluctuate. Up one day and down another, drivers are trying to figure out new ways to get the most of out of the gasoline they put into their cars every week. For some, maximizing their miles per gallon means upgrading to a more fuel-efficient vehicle. For others, making the most out of their trip to the pump means staying up to date on their existing car's maintenance to ensure it's not having to work any harder than it needs to. One of the simplest ways of keeping your car functioning as smooth as possible is by keeping it up to date on its oil changes.

The oil in your car serves the very important purpose of lubricating the different moving components of your engine. The engine of your vehicle is a very complex system of metal parts that are continually moving against each other with considerable force to send your car down the road. As your engine continues to send your vehicle through city streets, across long highways, and sometimes down rural roads, it collects all sorts of debris and the oil, which is typically petroleum-based, begins to break down or be consumed by the engine in the process. Over time, the remaining oil grows dirtier and isn't able to do its job quite as efficiently as it once could. If the oil grows too dirty or is almost completely consumed by the engine, the lack of lubrication on the metal components as they work to drive your car will cause your engine to become damaged, seize up, and be completely useless.

Though an engine seizing up is one of the worst case scenarios of what can occur without regular oil maintenance, a car that is overdue for an oil change will have an engine that is working not only against the weight of the car, but the friction at the points where components make contact. An engine driving a car forward with dirty or low oil is similar to trying to open a car with a rusty can-opener. Without proper oil maintenance, the engine has to work against itself and therefore requires more power to do so. More power means more fuel and more trips to the gas station.

Though most lube-change shops and some mechanic's shops recommend changing the oil on a vehicle every 3,000 miles, it's best consult your vehicle's owner's manual to see how frequently the manufacturer recommends. Sometimes that might be sooner than a lube shop might recommend, but in other instances, an oil change is recommended anywhere from 5,000-7,000 miles. By having your vehicle's oil switched to non-petroleum-based synthetic oil, the oil does not break down nearly as easily and its viscosity is more resistant to extreme temperatures. Because they do not break down nearly as easily as petroleum-based oil, synthetic oil only needs to be changed around every 7,000-10,000 miles or possibly longer. Still, there are some instances when synthetic oil is not recommended; such as breaking new engines and in much older cars where it may not be worth the pricey investment.

As with any other maintenance to your vehicle, always seek the advice of an experienced mechanic before making any modifications to your car and consult your owner's manual for the manufacturer's recommended maintenance for your vehicle. Staying on top of oil changes is not only beneficial for your car's gas mileage, and therefore your pocket book, but it also helps reduce engine wear to ensure you and your car have a long and happy relationship.
