Time To Get An Oil Change? Signs And Symptoms

The oil change is probably the most important part of your car's maintenance. All too often we forget to have it done, and the consequences for your car can be devastating. It's a simple operation that you can either do yourself, or take to a shop and have done professionally. No matter how busy you are, you should never skip it. The damage to your car can be serious.

Why Do I Need To Change my Oil?

In order to understand why you need an oil change, let's look at what motor oil does for your car. There are two main purposes - one, it keeps everything lubricated. It covers all the parts of the engine with a thin film that keeps them from rubbing together. Two, it removes chemicals, bit of metal and other impurities from the engine.

What happens if you don't get an oil change? Because they'll lose their lubrication, the parts of your engine will rub together and cause friction. This not only wears down the parts of the engine, but it also causes excess heat, which can result in your vehicle overheating. If the motor oil gets old and dirty, it can no longer remove impurities. This sludge will build up in the engine, and eventually it will have to be cleaned by a professional mechanic.

How Often Do I Need An Oil Change?

In general, you should get an oil change every 7,500 miles. However, this depends on how much you drive. If you spend lots of time driving, you should consider getting it done more often - something like every 6,000 miles. For example, if you use your vehicle every day for work driving across town, or if you make lots of cross country trips in your car, you should consider doing it more often.

In fact, it never hurts to have it done more often. You can greatly prolong the life of your car by taking it in for an oil change every 5,000 miles. This will definitely ensure that your car is running cleanly and smoothly.

Signs That You Need An Oil Change

You can often tell that motor oil is old and dirty by simply looking at it. Fresh motor oil is clear and dark brown or amber in color. Older motor oil that needs to be changed is dark and murky. It doesn't take an expert mechanic's eye to see that how dark and dirty motor oil can be. When you're checking your motor oil, take a good look and see how it looks, especially if it's been 5,000 or so miles since your last oil change. Another sign is that your motor oil level is constantly lower than it should be. Most cars also have an engine oil light that will tell you when it's getting to be time for a change.

Getting an oil change is easy and inexpensive. It's a regular part of your car's maintenance that you shouldn't skip out on. Check your motor oil level each time you fuel up, and keep track of how many miles it's been so that you don't forget. Skipping your much-needed oil change can really damage your car; so make sure you get it done.

The Get Away Car

You reach a point in life when you have to choose. Career over passion. Work over play. It’s when surfers turn CEOs. Photographers turn lawyers. Fly-fishers turn doctors. Mountain climbers turn engineers.

How To Maintain Car Engines For Fuel Efficiency

Fuel efficiency of car engines is considered as an imperative and essential factor when buying a new car, all thanks to the high fuel prices. Most car makers have taken action to provide more fuel efficient cars that return more than 80mpg of economy however, there are millions of old cars that people use for their daily commute, by following the simple guidelines below, they can also achieve maximum fuel efficiency and the lowest carbon emissions from their car engines.

1. Keep the Engine Appropriately Tuned

It is very important to follow the maintenance schedule of the engine, for instance, replacement of air filter, spark plug and oxygen sensors, also keep an eye on any on-board diagnostics malfunctions in the Engine Control Module. The most important is to change the engine oil as instructed in your car's manual.

 2. Fuel Evaporation

Fuel evaporation is another parameter that needs to be attended by tightly closing the fuel tank lids and by parking in shades, believe it or not, can improve your mileage by as much as 10 percent.

3. Use the Recommended Grade Engine Oil

The most important factor to keep your car engine at fuel efficient state is proper engine oil with low-kinematic thickness that is also referred to as low "weight" engine oil. You can get better mileage by 1-2 percent by using the recommended grade of vehicle engine oil. For instance, using 10W-30 motor oil in an engine intended to use 5W-30 can worsen your fuel efficiency by 1-2 percent. Contemporary engines have such accurate tolerance that very trivial oil is often required, thicker oil, such as 10W30 or 10W40, may not lubricate as well, because it won't pour as swiftly into key oil ways and fractures. You must check the owner's manual for suggested viscosity and ask for it exclusively when oil is changed.

4. Minimize the Idling

Your engine wastes fuel when car is in idle state, simply because you are burning fuel while going nowhere. If you are waiting for someone and you know that it will take more than 30 seconds, switch your engine off because you are just burning money.

5. Keep Tires Appropriately Inflated

You can get up to 3.3 percent better mileage by keeping your car tires inflated to the suitable pressure, this reduces the resistance so less power is required to move the car. Under-inflated tires can lower your engine efficiency through more fuel consumption. The correct tire pressure for your vehicle is generally found on a sticky label in the driver's side door jamb and/or in your owner's manual. Do not use the utmost pressure printed on the tire's sidewall.

6. Smooth Driving

The way you drive your car also plays a huge role in fuel consumption, by driving fast, you might save 5-10 minutes, however by smoothing down you can improve the fuel consumption of your car's engine, if you normally drive on a motorway at 70mph, try changing it to 60mph can increase the fuel economy by up to 4 miles per gallon. Avoid as much as you can from putting your foot down on the throttle and from stomping on the brake paddle, this will not only save you on fuel costs but also money on wear and tear of brakes.

4 Reasons Not To Wait To Check Your "Check Engine" Light

I see it all the time. The customer limps his car in, shaking and shuddering every time he pushes the gas pedal. I could almost write a script - "It seemed to be running OK, then all of a sudden..." After asking a few questions, though, it turns out that it wasn't "all of a sudden."

"Has the check engine light been on long?" I ask. "Well, about a month I guess, but it was running fine so I didn't think anything was wrong", they respond. After checking the codes stored in the computer, it reveals a bad oxygen sensor and a failed catalytic converter, which means for whatever reason the air and fuel entering your engine doesn't burn thoroughly enough, potentially causing gas to enter your exhaust. This gas ignites in the exhaust system, which causes your catalytic converter to melt down, which then plugs the exhaust, which basically means you aren't going anywhere too fast. $800 to $2000 or more later and you're back on the road.

The unfortunate thing is if he had checked it a month earlier, a $200 oxygen sensor may have prevented the problem from getting that bad in the first place.

1. Save yourself a lot of money - your check engine light is called a warning light for a reason. Sometimes you may physically feel a problem, but more often than not you won't. Anything left unattended to could possibly cost you big time down the road. It is true - an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure.

2. Save yourself a lot of time - I had a fleet customer recently who had a crew driving a work truck several hundred miles to a job. Unbeknownst to him, the check engine light was on the whole time, and eventually caused a major engine failure which required a new engine. Not only did it cost him thousands of dollars, his truck was out of commission for over a week, when it could have originally been fixed in an hour.

3. Save yourself a lot of extra work - in many states, a check engine light is an automatic failure when you go to get an emissions test. Once your car fails, you have to have the problem repaired, and then it has to go through something known as a "drive cycle", which basically means your car has to go through several different conditions to verify it is working properly before the computer resets and allows the emission test to pass. This could take days or weeks, depending on how the car is driven. After all that, you then have to start the process all over by getting it retested at the emission inspection station. Hope it passes this time!

4. Finally, save yourself a lot of stress - I don't know about you, but just the thought of the first three reasons stresses me out. Why not go ahead and bite the bullet, figure out what it's going to take to fix the check engine light, and hopefully save yourself a lot of unnecessary money, time, extra work, and stress!

On a final note, if your check engine light is flashing, that is your cars way of saying, "HEY! you better hurry up! This could be bad!" This typically means you have a severe ignition system misfire, and that could add up to a whole lot of number 1-4, when a simple tune up with new spark plugs and wires (or coil boots, depending on your system) might fix everything.
